It’s OK to be nervous before your photo session, a lot of people have trouble feeling comfortable on camera. It’s not something people do everyday. And you really have to trust the photographer, that they will take images you like. But remember it’s likely that photographers deal with people who hate having their photos taken every day. Let that sink in, every day. Every day dealing with sensitive issues of self worth, and body image problems. I promise the majority of professional photographers have the skills to put you at ease. That is the the biggest part of our job. There are however things you can do to make it easier and more enjoyable for yourself!
A lot of people worry they won’t know what to do in front of the camera. The majority of my job is to help you relax. To make you forget that the camera is there. something you fear. How do I do that, when it seems impossible? I talk to you. We have a conversation, I give direction. I keep your mind occupied. We have fun together and enjoy the moment.
The thing I believe that will help the most with feeling at ease in front of the lens is comfortable and flattering clothing. How many of us have experienced that when you feel great, you look great. Clothing is a powerful thing that can make you feel your best. It doesn’t need to be fancy or expensive, one of my favorite shirts that I feel fabulous in is from Target. I also believe in comfort. If you don’t feel comfortable wearing it, then don’t. If it’s a little too small or too baggy, you’re better off picking something else. When you’re wearing something that makes you feel good you will have that radiating glow of Joie de vivre that will show in the photos.
Realize that feeling comfortable takes some time. This is a new experience, in new situations it takes a few minutes to get accustomed to whatever is happening. Often times the best images I take are towards the end of the session, once people have opened up and are feeling the flow of the session. Know that I will be patient with you, if something isn’t working, an outfit or a pose, we will try something new. Not everything will work for every person. Each photo session is very different, and we play to your strengths and comfort.
Try to realize the discomfort you have during the session if any, is temporary. I try to take my clients mind away from any from any unpleasant feelings but if they come up, just them pass. If you focus on something else, they will have trouble staying in your thoughts.
